Foreign Ministry Denies Lavrov Broke Arm in Turkey

The Foreign Ministry on Tuesday denied reports that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had broken his arm while on an official visit to Turkey with President Vladimir Putin.

"We're talking about a slight sports' injury, which had no effect on the schedule of the minister," an unidentified ministry representative told RIA-Novosti.

The representative said that reports that Lavrov had visited a hospital in Istanbul, where doctors had applied a plaster cast to his left arm were "absolutely false."

CNN Turk, the Turkish website of popular U.S. news channel CNN, reported Monday that Lavrov had to cancel a meeting with his Turkish colleague Ahmet Davutoglu on Monday because of the injury.

The same day, Putin held talks with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, where, among other issues, they discussed the situation in Syria.

Lavrov is scheduled to take part in a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council in Brussels on Tuesday, when discussions on Syria are expected to continue alongside talks on the alliance's missile-defense plans.
