First Drowning Death Recorded in Moscow

A 30-year-old male swimmer has drowned in a pond near the Sevastopolskaya metro station, the first drowning death recorded in Moscow this year, Interfax reported Tuesday.

The death, which has not been officially confirmed, took place on Chernomorsky Bulvar in southern Moscow, an unidentified medical source told Interfax.

Fifty-two people drowned in Moscow last year, and another 119 had to be rescued, according to the Emergency Situations Ministry.

Swimming in unsanctioned locations while drunk is the No. 1 contributing factor in aquatic accidents, the ministry said.

Swimming season in the capital officially kicks off on June 1. But the temperature has soared this week to around 30 degrees Celsius and was expected to set a record Tuesday afternoon.
