A firefighter in the Far East was knocked down by a snow pile from the roof as he prepared to enter a burning high-story apartment through the window, state television reported Thursday.

The firefighter, who was not identified, climbed a ladder to get to a window of a burning apartment in Magadan to save a little child when a heap of snow hit him on the head, sending him flying head first down the ladder, Channel One said.

The firefighter managed to stop his flight before he reached the ground, and the child was rescued by his fellow worker.
