Dagestan Minister Arrested for Embezzlement

A senior government official in Dagestan has been arrested on embezzlement charges in the latest  crackdown on crime and corruption in the volatile region.

Dagestani Deputy Education and Science Minister Idris Musayev, who had formerly served as head of the republic's Institute for the Advanced Training of Teachers, has been charged with appropriating more than 2 million rubles ($65,000) allocated for teachers' career-enhancement courses, Itar-Tass reported, citing the  Interior Ministry.

Investigators believe that the alleged embezzlement was covered up by putting the money on the books as bonuses to the institute's faculty. The institute's chief accountant and a payroll official have also been arrested.

Earlier this week, the Interior Ministry reported the arrest of a supposed senior member of a counterfeiters' gang in Dagestan.
