Authorities Battling Slush After Heavy Snowfall

After heavy snowfall in Moscow over the weekend, the capital's housing and public utilities services are continuing to battle slush and ice on the roads.

Moscow saw 59 millimeters of precipitation since Saturday evening, equal to 65 percent of the average for October, forecasters said, Interfax reported Monday.

Although the snow did not stick around for long, Moscow's roads resembled rivers by midday Sunday and forced an army of road-cleaning equipment onto the streets.

Igor Pergamenshchik, the deputy mayor's press secretary, told the news agency that authorities were continuously cleaning and treating the city's roads with an anti-freezing agent into the early hours of Monday.

Entrances to metro stations and bus stops were also de-iced, he said, adding that "our teams have the situation under control."

Meteorologists predict more snow, rain and slush in the days to come. Regional temperatures are expected to fall below zero, creating perfect conditions for black ice on the roads.
