The number of Russians who support introducing a nationwide ban on abortions has doubled in a decade, reaching 41 percent, the independent polling agency Levada Center said.
The number of those in favor of a complete ban on abortions has grown from 8 percent in 1998 to 16 percent in 2010, the report said. Another 25 percent only approve of therapeutic, not elective, abortions, up from 13 percent earlier.
Forty-eight percent disapprove of a ban, down from 59 percent, while 11 percent are undecided, compared with 20 percent earlier.
The survey of 1,600 people had a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.

Abortion Ban Gains Support
To allow abortions on demand 60 years ago may have made sense. However, abortions are the same as medical operations risking the lives of the women. Plus, what is worse, after two or more abortions the women become infertile, cannot conceive children. Young people are sexually most active, therefore, have a high chance of becoming pregnant.
When the birth control pill became available 50 years ago, the Russian government did not change from abortion to prescribing birth control pills. Birth control pills have proven to be absolutely save. The government should not just ban abortions, but put all sexually active women on birth control pills. In western countries it is normal that young women use 'the pill'.
