530 Cops Disciplined Over Rights Violations

More than 500 policemen have been disciplined after prosecutors accused police of committing "ubiquitous" rights violations in a November report.

"Following a review by the Interior Ministry, 530 law enforcement officers, including 30 police chiefs, have been disciplined," the Prosecutor General's Office said in a statement Wednesday, adding that nine criminal cases had been opened against those responsible.

In their report, prosecutors said police in various regions had fabricated performance statistics, pressed misdemeanor charges against minors without consulting the relevant government commissions and opened 39 criminal cases on false evidence.

The report also said that police had detained suspects in conditions that placed their health and lives in jeopardy.
