Russians React to Ban on Western Food

A sudden ban on the import of Western food on the orders of President Vladimir Putin is expected to hit Russian consumers hard. The measure will slash consumer choice in supermarkets, hike Russia's already high inflation rate and force interest rates up, analysts say.

Putin says the ban will ensure "the safety of Russia," the West sees the ban as a simple retaliatory measure for economic sanctions imposed on Russia over its involvement in Ukraine.

But what do ordinary Russians think of the ban on meat, fruit, nuts, vegetables and fish? The Moscow Times took to the streets of Moscow to find out.
