International Contest for Zaryadye Park Announced

Moscow's chief architect has announced the initiation of an international contest for the best landscape and architectural design of a park in the Zaryadye District on site of the demolished Rossiya Hotel, Interfax reported.

The park is expected to have high-quality infrastructure and will be open for the public all year round, said chief architect Sergei Kuznetsov.

The competition will rank among the most important architectural events of recent decades, and is expected to begin this year, Kuznetsov added.

Applications for the competition will be accepted from April 19 to May 22. Six teams will be selected to participate in the second stage and will each receive an $80,000 prize.

These teams will continue to work on the project. The final design will be chosen from November 1 to November 12.

Zaryadye is expected to become a focal point of social life in the capital, "a real jewel in the crown of public spaces and parks in Moscow," said the architect.

Zaryadye will become an open-air museum of sorts, where the permanent exhibition on show is the city itself, according to the project's official website.

The idea of the Zaryadye park was originally proposed last January by Vladimir Putin.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the construction of the park should end by 2015.
