Two people died in a Sunday accident at a mine developed by Udachninsky Mining Company, a subsidiary of diamond monopoly Alrosa, in the republic of Yakutia, the Yakutian department of the Emergency Situations Ministry said, as cited by Interfax.
"A total of six people suffered from the accident; two of them died," the officials said.
Earlier reports spoke of four people being injured. The accident occurred at a depth of 365 meters. There were 17 people in the accident area, 12 of whom returned to the surface. Five remained underground. Out of the 12, four were taken to a hospital with injuries. The five people remaining underground were retrieved by the Yakutian division of a paramilitary mining rescue team, two of them inanimate.
