Foreign Property Could Be Allowed

Government officials will probably not have to shed their foreign residential real estate holdings, although non-residential properties could have more restrictions under a proposed law on foreign assets, a State Duma deputy said.

"If the relationship [to the owner] is sufficiently transparent and declared, then I suppose it will be possible to own residential property," said Vladimir Pligin, head of the State Duma Constitutional Legislation Committee, Interfax reported.

Pligin asked journalists to consider their approach when exposing real estate holdings of government employees. "I call on you, when it is possible, that as soon as you discover something and learn that it is within the bounds of the law, that you provide support and say, 'Yes, he has something, but it's OK.' This will also benefit you," the lawmaker said.
