City Hall Buries Plans to Build Mall Under Pushkin Square

Pushkin square will have disruptive construction works avoided as its mall plans are now scrapped. Igor Tabakov

The City Hall has abandoned plans to build an underground shopping center beneath Pushkin Square in central Moscow, an unidentified city official said Friday.

The idea was thought up in 2004 by then-Mayor Yury Luzhkov, but Sergei Sobyanin, the current mayor, has drawn a red line through the plans, Interfax reported.

The now-scrapped project also envisaged the construction of an underground car park in addition to the shopping center, which would have been built inside a large tunnel.
