Volcano Erupting in Far East

A volcano erupting in the Far East is sending plumes of gas and ash high into the sky and creating a lava lake.

The Plosky Tolbachik volcano is in Kamchatka, hundreds of kilometers from the nearest residential areas.

"There were no lava lakes at Kamchatka volcanoes until now," said Gennady Karpov, a volcano expert at the Academy of Sciences in the Far East. "We have never seen this before."

Plosky Tolbachik has emitted jets of hot lava up to 200 meters high. Its last eruption occurred in November after almost 40 years of dormancy.
