Ultranationalist Kvachkov Is Charged

Outspoken ultranationalist and former intelligence Colonel Vladimir Kvachkov was formally charged late Wednesday with attempting to stage an armed uprising and abetting terrorism, Interfax reported.

No details were available because the case is classified. Kvachkov, 63, did not plead guilty, his lawyer said.

Kvachkov said earlier that the charges are fabricated by Anatoly Chubais, architect of Russia’s economic reforms of the 1990s.

Kvachkov was charged with an attempt on Chubais’ life in 2005 but acquitted by juries in two separate trials. He was arrested in the current case the day after the Supreme Court upheld his second acquittal in December.
