A Moscow court on Friday ordered the seizure a New York apartment belonging to self-exiled tycoon Boris Berezovsky over charges that he provided false information to British officials to get political asylum in Britain.
But Berezovsky said Friday that he did not own an apartment in New York, Gazeta.ru reported. Berezovsky added that if court officials bought him an apartment there, he would defend it in court.
The Basmanny District Court issued the ruling on the request of the Investigative Committee, Interfax reported.
British courts have refused to extradite Berezovsky, who faces up to six years in prison if convicted of deliberately misleading British officials. Britain granted asylum to Berezovsky in 2003.
Berezovsky has been convicted of other charges in absentia, including a September ruling that he formed a “criminal group” that was active from 1991 to 2001.
In June, a Moscow region court sentenced Berezovsky to 13 years in prison on charges of defrauding AvtoVAZ in the 1990s.
In 2007, Berezovsky was sentenced to six years in prison on charges of embezzling funds from Aeroflot.
