9 Killed in Dagestani Raid

Security forces killed nine suspected militants in Dagestan in the storming of a house where they were hiding with women and children, officials said.

The special forces surrounded a house on the outskirts of Makhachkala in an overnight raid, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee said.

All-night negotiations failed, the committee said, and after the rebels opened fire, the special forces let the children out and stormed the house.

One of those killed was a woman who, pretending to turn herself in, approached the special forces and detonated an explosive belt strapped to her body, the committee said, adding that she was killed.

Eight bodies were later found in the house, two law enforcement officials said.

Separately, Saigid Saiputdinov, a senior guard at Chernomortransneft, a subsidiary of Transneft, was found shot dead in his car on Sunday in the Dagestani town of Kizlyar, the Investigative Committee said, linking the killing to his professional activity.
