The Interior Ministry announced Thursday that it had detained 10 individuals who were planning to perpetrate a terrorist attack in the Moscow region on Victory Day.

The suspects, residents of the Moscow region hailing from the North Caucasian republic of Dagestan, were detained on the morning of May 7 after an improvised explosive device was uncovered at their residence, according to a statement on the ministry website.

The ministry said it had received information regarding the individuals' acquisition of materials to build an improvised explosive device on the eve of the May holidays.

Law enforcement agents also seized large amounts of religious literature at the suspects' residence, including books contained on the Justice Ministry's list of extremist materials banned in the country. Maps detailing the location of Victory Day celebrations in the Moscow region were also uncovered.

The Interior Ministry said in its statement that the organizer and conspirators of the thwarted attack had confessed to their crime, and that a criminal case had now been opened on charges of conspiracy to commit a terrorist act.
