Russia's Valenki Winter Boots Making a Comeback

The distinct winter footwear known as valenki, a staple in Russians' wardrobes for centuries, are making a bit of a comeback these days.



Valenki, boots made of wool felt to protect against the harsh cold, can be worn either as inner footwear or outer footwear, though they are not waterproof, so are often paired with rain boots.



The boots have been a staple for many Russians throughout generations, found in the wardrobes of everyone from young children to soldiers. The warm, high boots are often the best solution for dealing with temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius.



Valenki may have lost their popularity in many urban areas because they could not protect against the slushy, wet snow, but some companies are bringing them back with a contemporary upgrade — offering fun patterns and brighter colors than the traditional black, gray and brown models.
