Nearly 200 Detained Protesting Verdict Against Navalny Brothers
Opposition activists staged an unsanctioned political rally in Moscow's Manezh Square on Tuesday following the sentencing of prominent anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny and his brother Oleg.?
A Moscow court on Tuesday morning gave Alexei Navalny a suspended sentence, while his brother Oleg was sentenced to three and a half years of imprisonment. Both brothers deny any wrongdoing.?
The protest had been scheduled for Jan. 15, the planned day of the verdict, but activists on Monday hurriedly reorganized after the hearing was abruptly rescheduled to Dec. 30.
About 18,000 people said they would attend the event on Facebook. A Moscow Times reporter saw approximately 1,500 people at the scene. By about 9:30 p.m., more than 170 arrests were reported throughout the course of the night, including the arrests of several journalists.
