Art Walls Bring Color to Moscow
If you glance up at Moscow walls now and again, you may have noticed them change color over the last few months. Yes, there has been the sudden, often startling appearance of agitation wall art that has seen multistory buildings suddenly be turned into a Crimean landscape. (Head to Ulitsa Pokrovka if you want to check them out.)
But there has been much more than that as artists from all over the world have been making their way to Moscow as part of street art festival Artmosphere, which runs till Nov. 2.
A man rides a fish, a pop-art girl makes a phone call, and famous Russian faces stare out from several stories. Street art stars like Spain's Sixe, whose work went up in London's Tate Modern and Momo and who was employed by the New York Department of Transportation, were among those who came and went up ladders to paint away.
Away from the festival, the city has developed its own street art too. Check out the "I love Moscow" sign near the Kuznetsky Most metro station. If you go back to Soviet times, then the city had its own tradition too. Spot the Soviet one on these pages, which until very recently was hidden behind a huge advertising board.
