Sergei Mitrokhin (Сергей Сергеевич Митрохин) was born on May 20, 1963, in Moscow.

Education: Moscow Lenin State Pedagogical University, 1985. Sociology, 1992. Ph.D., dissertation: "Political Analysis of the Formation of Federative Relations in Russia," 2001.

1986-1987: Dispatcher in the Moscow City Travel and Excursions Bureau

1987: Began actively participating in politics. In 1988, he co-founded the samizdat newspaper Khronograph and co-authored it through 1989.

1990-1995: Deputy head of the International Institute of Humanitarian and Political Research

1993: Participated in the founding of the Yabloko electoral block. (The name "Yabloko" is a portmanteau composed of the last names of block's founders — Grigory Yavlinsky, Yury Boldyrev and Vladimir Lukin.) Later that year, Mitrokhin was elected to the State Duma on the Yabloko list. He remained a Duma deputy until 2003.

1994-2003: State Duma deputy. Deputy chair of the Local-Self Government Committee. According to his web site, he prepared 82 laws on a variety of subjects, including human rights, housing and communal services, local self-government, public movements, political parties, anti-corruption, national security and ecology.

1995: Became a member of Yabloko's Central Committee. By 2000, he was in charge of the block's ideological department.

2000: Campaign manager for Yabloko's presidential candidate, Grigory Yavlinsky. Yavlinsky won 5.8 percent of the vote, finishing a distant third to Gennady Zyuganov (29 percent) and Vladimir Putin (53 percent).

2001-2008: Deputy chairman of the Yabloko party (formed in 2001). Mitrokhin helped draft key party documents, including the Democratic Manifesto and the Seven Steps Towards Equal Opportunities plan.

2003: Yabloko failed to win 5 percent of the vote, the minimum for State Duma representation

2005-2009: Moscow City Duma deputy, head of the Yabloko faction. Served on the Public Safety, Housing, Construction, Development, Budget and Environmental committees.

2008-present: Chairman of Yabloko, replacing Yavlinsky.

2009: Yabloko fails to win a seat in the City Duma amid accusations of electoral fraud

Mitrokhin is married and has a daughter.
