Short Circuit to Blame for Moscow Metro Fire

The fire that disrupted service in Moscow’s Vykhino metro station was caused by a short circuit, the RIA Novosti news agency reported Friday, citing a source within the emergency services.

The service on the Moscow metro's Purple Line (Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya) was affected.

About 300,000 Muscovites on Friday morning received messages from the Moscow metro informing them about suspension of train service between the Tekstilshchiki and Kotelniki metro stations and the closure of the southern part of the purple line over “power supply problem.”

Videos shared by witnesses showed fire engulfing the train tracks of Vykhino metro station, resulting in clouds of smoke.

The fire was eliminated by 6 a.m., according to the Emergency Situations Ministry, and train traffic resumed by 9 a.m. Trains run at extended intervals, RIA Novosti reported.
