Vietnam Wants In On Far East

Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang proposed a number of initiatives for bilateral trade and economic cooperation at a meeting with Russia's Far East development minister and presidential envoy to the Far East Federal District, Viktor Ishayev, Interfax reported.

He proposed establishing regular director flights between cities in Russia's Far East and Vietnam, and considering the possibility of setting up joint ventures to process seafood and manufacture furniture and textile products.

Ishayev expressed support for Sang's initiatives, and spoke of projects in the resource sector, transportation and agriculture. There are "colossal opportunities" in the forestry sector, he said.

"We annually ship up to 10 million cubic meters of unprocessed timber and are interested in processing it. Companies from Malaysia, Japan and China now work here, but they process a tiny amount," Ishayev said.
