Rail Project Might Resume

Russian Railways hopes that Libyan authorities will approve resumption of a project to build a railroad along its Mediterranean Sea coast, Russian Railways vice president Alexander Saltanov said Thursday, Interfax reported.

"We are hoping that we will soon be able to resume our dialogue," Saltanov said. Even so, the decision will be made at the intergovernmental level, he said.

"The project is still interesting to us, but a great number of aspects have to be weighed and calculated," he said. "This is not a simple task, going back and beginning at the point when the project was suspended," he said.

The 550-kilometer Sirte-Benghazi railroad, which is expected to cost 2.2 billion euros ($2.8 billion), was suspended when the Libyan civil war began in 2011.
