Pulp Nonfiction: Real-Life Horror Stories

Pet Shop Blaze

By Peter Spinella

Dozens of animals suffocated when an electrical fire filled a pet store with smoke on Sunday afternoon in the west Siberian city of Novokuznetsk.

The flames tore through a cash register, wooden shelves and plastic panels, spreading toxic smoke throughout the confined 4-by-5-meter display area, killing all the animals — cats, hamsters, rabbits, rats, chinchillas, parrots, even fish — that were trapped inside, SDS-Media reported.

Firefighters were alerted at 3:38 p.m. as thick, black clouds billowed from the shop, which is named Edyem and is regularly closed on Sundays, at 17B Ulitsa Druzhby.

Faulty wiring likely caused the blaze, a fire department official told Komsomolskaya Pravda. Foul play was not suspected. No people were hurt.
