Imbibing some hard liquor with a friend he had invited to his home, a resident of the Sovietsky district of the central Mari El region decided (perhaps unwisely) to smoke the pair's last cigarette, investigators said Wednesday.

The guest was unflattered by the seemingly inhospitable move, fetched a hunting rifle that was located in the home and shot his host in the shoulder, the local branch of the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

But the wound was not severe, and the friends eventually calmed down, the statement said. However, after the guest had fallen asleep, the host crept up on him and blew his brains out.

As of Wednesday, the host was being hospitalized for his shoulder wound, and a murder investigation was under way. No names were disclosed.
