Russia's Sakhalin Region Experiences Wave of Earthquakes

Russia's far eastern Sakhalin region recorded 11 minor earthquakes off its coast on Wednesday, the regional branch of the Emergency Situations Ministry said in several online statements.

The wave of quakes started around 9 a.m. on Wednesday and continued through to midnight that day, the statements show.

The largest earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6 and took place 200 kilometers southwest off the coast of the Southern Kuril Islands at a depth of 45 kilometers.

The quakes went unnoticed by residents and there was no threat of tidal waves, the Emergency Situations Ministry said in the reports.
