Russia's First Humanoid Robot Preps for Space Voyage

Roscosmos

Russia’s space agency Roscosmos has released a video of its first anthropomorphic robot, the Skybot F-850, being prepared for its upcoming trip to the International Space Station.

The eerily human-like robot was designed to assist in the construction of human bases on the moon and other planets, its designers told the Daily Mail newspaper.

Footage shows the robot, nicknamed FEDOR, manipulating different objects and performing moves with mechanical hands, but with assistance from a human operator. The 6-foot-tall robonaut can reportedly carefully mimic human movements, with skills including steering vehicles, standing up after falling down and using power tools.

While the robot can do several activities on its own, it will still be overseen by a human during the space mission, Roscosmos has said.

The robot will be launched into space on a Soyuz MS-14 spacecraft on Aug. 22 from Russia's Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
