Body of American Student Found in Russian Mountains

A rescue team has recovered the body of American student Colin Madsen, 25, in the mountains of Russia's Siberian republic of Buryatia, the RIA Novosti news agency reported Monday.

A student at the Irkutsk branch of the Moscow State Linguistic University, Madsen traveled with friends to the resort village of Arshan on March 26 to go mountain climbing. The following morning, he had vanished from the guest house.

A team of volunteers located Madsen's body in the mountains outside Arshan, regional Investigative Committee spokesman Dmitry Stolyarov said, RIA Novosti reported. Marsden's clothes were found intact, with his money and documents untouched.

A forensic examination is currently underway in order to confirm the exact cause of Marsden's death.

“The inter-district investigation must first establish the reasons for which a lightly dressed student left his guest house and entered the forest, without informing his friends, before the criminal case will continue,” Stolyarov said.

The forensic medical examination will include a toxicology report to determine whether the student was under the influence of intoxicating substances at the time of his death.
