An Austrian court has approved the extradition of notorious Russian mob boss Aslan Gagiev, the Kommersant newspaper reported Tuesday.
Gagiev’s gang is accused of carrying out 60 murders in Moscow and the North Caucuses, including the killing of a deputy vice-president for Russia’s North Ossetia.
It’s the third time which the Viennese court has granted the request for Gagiev’s extradition following several appeals.
The crime lord’s extradition was finally approved after Russian guarantees that Gagiev’s trial and detention would be monitored by Austrian diplomats to ensure international laws were being met.
Gagiev, who was arrested by Austrian police at a Vienna train station in January 2015, had been released on bail worth 100,000 euros in March this year.
An Austrian judge had previously approved his extradition to Bulgaria, where Gagiev was wanted on fraud charges. Bulgarian authorities have since dropped the case.
