Russian Foreign Ministry Abolishes Human Rights Post

A.Gordeyeva / Vedomosti

Russia’s Foreign Ministry is set to abolish the post of human rights commissioner.

The position will be formally dissolved when the current commissioner, Konstantin Dolgov, moves to his new post within the presidential administration, Russia’s Izvestia newspaper reported Tuesday.

An unnamed source told the outlet that the position was simply "no longer needed."

The government announced April 21 that Dolgov would be taking up a new role in the Office of Public Projects, overseeing communication between the Public Chamber, the Human Rights Council, and the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights and Children’s Rights.

The commissioner’s responsibilities will be transferred to the Department for Humanitarian Cooperation and Human Rights (DHHR), led by Anatoly Viktorov.
