The Crimean city of Sevastopol is set to appear on a new Russian banknote.
Some 428,000 people voted for the city to be featured on one of the country's new banknotes: the 200 ruble and the 2000 ruble notes.
The city of Kazan will also appear on one of the notes, having received just under 422,000 votes.
The result could be seen as controversial, as Russia's Central Bank was forced to investigate voting within the city in September. A number of residents in Kazan had complained about organized “voting events” in the city's schools, universities and public offices.
Unsuccessful candidates included the Russian cities and regions of Vladimir, Volgograd, the Far East region, Irkutsk, Nizhniy Novgorod, Petrozavodsk, Sergiev Posad, and Sochi.
The results are set to be officially announced tonight on Russian state television. The new notes will be released in the country by the end of 2017.
