The Soviet Union was less than a year dead when scuba diver Vladimir Broumensky first created the underwater museum of sunken sculptures and busts off the coast of Cape Tarkhankut in Crimea. Officially called the “Alley of Leaders,” and known informally as the “Park of the Fallen Heroes,” the collection started with a Lenin bust and now includes roughly 50 other moss-covered monuments to former Soviet leaders and Communist figures, as well as replicas of some of the world’s most iconic attractions, like the Eiffel Tower and London’s Tower Bridge. The museum is still growing, too, with plans to double the collection reportedly in the works.
