Four Reported Dead in Kazakhstan Shootout

Police in Kazakh city of Almaty have engaged in a shootout with an unknown suspect, the Interfax-Kazakhstan news agency reported Monday morning.

Residents told the agency that officers had warned them to stay away from the area on Abylai Khan Avenue, claiming that a “special operation” was underway.

The shootout began when a man tried to force his way into the Almaty Region Department of Internal Affairs. He was denied entry, after which he seized an officer's gun and fled.

Eyewitness Bolat Mukasheva told Interfax that one participant of the shootout was in a car and heavily injured, while a further two were lying in the street.

Interfax now reports that four people have died, including three police officers and one civilian whose car the gunman attempted to steal.

State-run news agency TASS reports a dozen officers wounded and in the hospital.

Kazakh law enforcement has not yet commented on the situation. The city has been placed under the highest level of terrorism alert, RT reported.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
