Putin Appoints New Head of Russian State Development Bank VEB

Sergei Gorkov

President Vladimir Putin has appointed Sergei Gorkov, a top official at Russia's biggest lender Sberbank, as the new chief of state development bank Vneshekonombank, the Kremlin's press service said in a statement Friday.

Gorkov, deputy chairman of Sberbank's management board, replaced Vladimir Dmitriyev, who has headed Vneshekonombank (VEB) since 2004, according to the statement.

The RBC newspaper reported last week that Dmitriyev announced his resignation to VEB employees, citing sources close to the government and the bank, however there was no official confirmation until now.

RBC's sources then named Gorkov among the main candidates for the post.

The reshuffle will affect other top positions at VEB.

According to an unidentified source in the banking sector, cited by the TASS news agency, after Gorkov takes up his new post, a senior vice-president of Sberbank, Svetlana Sagaidak, will be appointed deputy chairman of VEB's management board.

Nikolai Tsikholsky, another senior vice-president of Sberbank will become VEB's deputy head, an unidentified source close to the company told TASS.
