Russian Holidaymakers Fly Via Minsk to Egyptian Resorts

Russian tourists arrive to start their vacations at the airport of the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

Russians holidaymakers have found a way to circumvent the suspension of direct flights to Egypt by traveling to their favorite Red Sea resorts via Belarussian capital Minsk, a news report said.

Traveling from Russia to Sharm el-Sheikh or Hurghada via Minsk costs about twice as much as a previous direct flights from Moscow, but some holidaymakers are apparently unwilling to give up vacations at the Egyptian resorts that are tremendously popular among Russians, the Kommersant newspaper reported Thursday.

Approximately 2.6 million Russians visited Egypt last year, according to the Rosstat government statistics agency, Kommersant reported, estimating that about 218,000 Russians may be willing to travel through Belarus.

Direct flights between Russia and Egypt were suspended after the downing of a Russian passenger plane over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula killed all 224 people aboard.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
