Moscow Ice Skating Rink to Be Largest in Russian History

When combined with the infrastructure — including rental points and eateries — the rink complex will cover 60,000 square meters.

Moscow's All-Russia Exhibition Centre (VDNKh) on Nov. 27 will open the largest ice skating rink in Russian history — beating its own record set last winter.

The ice will span 20,000 square meters, running through the giant ornamental park and exhibition space in north Moscow and accommodating 4,500 skaters at the same time, the center said on its website. Meanwhile, the children's ice rink will double in size to 900 square meters.

When combined with the infrastructure — including rental points and eateries — the rink complex will cover 60,000 square meters.

There will be 39 square meters more ice than last year, according to the TASS news agency. The center said in January that last year's rink cost 785 million rubles ($12 million). It was visited by more than 1.5 million people, according to TASS.

This winter's skating season at VDNKh will run from Nov. 27 to March 27.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
