Russia's Foreign Ministry summoned Polish Ambassador Katarzyna Pelczynska-Nalecz on Thursday, the press service of the Polish Embassy in Moscow said.
The ambassador was called in to explain the demolition of a statue of Soviet General Ivan Chernyakhovsky in the Polish town of Pieniezno, a diplomatic source said. Other issues may also have been discussed, the source said.
The Polish Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the destruction of the monument.
Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticized Warsaw for allowing the removal of Soviet-era monuments in Poland, although she did not mention summoning the ambassador.
"Remembering history is what differentiates humans from animals," Zakharova said.
