A 50-year-old male Russian tourist has been arrested in Thailand's beach resort Pattaya for allegedly attempting to rape a female bar employee, the Pattaya Daily News reported.
The woman told police that a Russian man who had been drinking at the bar invited her to go to a party with him when the bar closed, the news outlet said Tuesday. The woman reportedly agreed, but on the way the man attacked the woman and tried to rape her. She hit him with a rock and managed to escape, the report said.
The man was found by police near the alleged crime scene, given first aid and then taken into custody. The Russian Embassy has not yet commented on the incident, Russian media reported.
Pattaya is a popular holiday destination for Russian tourists, although the economic crisis has taken its toll and the number of Russians holidaying in Thailand decreased last year by 5.5 percent, according to a report by Business Insider.
A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.
We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
