Russia's MegaFon to Hike Overseas Roaming Charges by 300%

Even with the higher roaming charges, MegaFon is still cheaper its two main rivals: VimpelCom and MTS.

MegaFon, Russia's second biggest mobile operator, will increase roaming charges in 51 countries by more than 300 percent on Dec. 8, the company said in a statement Thursday.

Charges will rise from 9 rubles ($0.2) a minute to 29 rubles a minute in the listed countries, which include popular European tourist destinations such as Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Italy and the Czech Republic. Rates will also increase in a number of former Soviet countries, such as Armenia, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova.

Even with the higher roaming charges, MegaFon is still cheaper its two main rivals: VimpelCom and MTS. MTS charges its customers anywhere from 65 to 89 rubles ($1.4 to $1.9) a minute for international roaming, while VimpelCom's Beeline brand bills 69 rubles ($1.5) a minute.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
