Transneft to Buy Moscow-City Building

Russian oil giant Transneft plans to buy the unfinished Evolution Tower in the Moscow-City business district for between $900 million and $1 billion, business daily Vedomosti reported, citing two unnamed sources close to the deal.

The distinctive Evolution Tower, which resembles a strand of twisting DNA, contains 62,000 square meters of office space, a shopping center and parking lot, Vedomosti reported last Wednesday.

Transneft, which has long looked to acquire a major office building, could finalize its purchase by the end of the year. The price range listed by Vedomosti would make the office building one of the most expensive in Moscow.

Behind-schedule construction and waning interest in Moscow-City, a collection of towering skyscrapers west of Moscow's center, has led to a vacancy rate of about 24 percent, Vedomosti reported, citing figures from Colliers International. Transneft's purchase would shrink that figure to between 12 and 15 percent.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
