SOCHI — The Russian wheelchair curling team joined Canada at the top of the round-robin table at the Sochi Paralympics, winning two games on the third day of competition.
Russia, skipped by 2012 world champion Andrei Smirnov, first defeated Vancouver 2010 Olympic silver medalist South Korea 7-5 and then edged out the U.S. 6-5 on Monday.
The host team rose to a 4-1 record, the same as reigning champion Canada, which suffered its first defeat on Monday, losing to Norway 8-6 in an extra end.
Surprise package Slovakia finally suffered its first defeat on the third day of competition, being destroyed by Britain 12-2. The Slovakians now share third place with Britain, each with three wins and one loss.
Elsewhere, Paralympic debutant China grabbed two victories, beating Sweden 8-4 and pounding Korea 11-2, while Norway defeated Finland 8-6.
In the wheelchair curling competition, mixed teams of men and women are mandatory. The final is on March 15.
A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.
We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
