Jeff Carter's Hat Trick Secures Canada Victory Over Austria in Olympic Hockey

Los Angeles Kings forward Jeff Carter netted a hat-trick to help Canada to a 6-0 victory over Austria in the Sochi Olympic men's hockey tournament on Friday.

After taking a modest 3-1 win over Norway in the Group B opener, reigning champion Canada blasted in all six goals in the first two periods.

Drew Doughty and Shea Weber bagged their second goals of the tournament in the first period, before Carter scored three times in the space of 12 minutes in the second, with Ryan Getzlaf adding Canada's sixth.

Canada's star-studded team will now face Finland on Sunday to decide the winner of Group B, who will avoid an extra playoff game.

Finland also grabbed its second win Friday, demolishing Norway 6-1.

Phoenix Coyotes forward Lauri Korpikoski registered a double, while star veteran Teemu Selanne, Jussi Jokinen and Jori Lehtera scored one goal apiece to give Finland a 5-0 advantage by the end of the second period.

Two-time Olympic silver medalist Finland allowed Norway forward Per-Age Skroder to score one in the third, before Olli Maatta made it 6-1.

Earlier in the day, the Czechs beat Latvia 4-2, before Sweden edged out Switzerland 1-0 for its second victory of the tournament.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
