Cross-Country Relay Wins Sweden First Olympic Gold

Sweden snatched gold in a tense sprint finish to the women's cross-country skiing 4x5km relay at the Sochi Olympics on Saturday.

Coming into the final bend, Sweden's Charlotte Kalla was level with the final-leg skiers for Finland and Germany before carving down the inside and sprinting for the line.

Krista Lahteenmaki of Finland briefly fell behind Germany's Denis Herrmann in the final 100 meters but recovered to take the silver medal, 0.5 seconds behind Kalla and 0.4 ahead of Herrmann.

The gold medal capped a stunning comeback for the Swedes, who had been almost 26 seconds off the Finns before Kalla posted the fastest leg of the race.

Coming into the race, Sweden had not once won gold in Sochi, having amassed five silver and two bronze medals in cross-country skiing. Kalla now has a gold medal and two silvers from the Sochi Games.

Finland was narrowly denied its first Winter Olympic gold medal since 2002.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
