A senior Russian diplomat says Moscow will help transport Syrian chemical weapons to a port in the country where they can be removed aboard ships.
Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said in remarks carried Friday by RIA Novosti that Russia would provide vehicles and other equipment to transport the chemical weapons to a port at Latakia. He added that Russian experts would be involved in the effort.
In September, Russia and the U.S. agreed to work together to destroy Syria's chemical weapons.
The U.S. has offered to provide a boat carrying a device in which the most toxic chemicals in Syria's stockpile can be neutralized. Chemicals and waste products will not be dumped at sea under the current plan.
