Police have detained five protesters for staging an unauthorized picket against milk fat in one of Moscow's most famous streets.
One man and four women in their twenties were arrested on Arbat and taken to a local police station on Thursday afternoon, a police spokesman told Interfax Friday.
The youngsters were holding up banners to draw attention to the need for a healthy lifestyle and in particular, the presumed dangers of consuming milk fat, the spokesman said.
All five health advocates will appear at Presnensky District Court on Friday to face charges of holding an unauthorized picket, punishable by a fine of up to 40,000 rubles ($1,230).
It is unclear whether the protest is in any way related to the recent Russian ban on dairy products from Lithuania or a possible upcoming review of Dutch dairy products.
A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.
We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
