YEREVAN, Armenia — Armenia's main opposition party said Monday that the country's president had rigged the result of a February election, and it called on the Constitutional Court to rule that its candidate won.
Incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan was declared the victor with 59 percent of the vote. Opposition leader Raffi Hovannisian was credited with 37 percent of the vote.
"We demand that the people's victory be registered and that Raffi Hovannisian be declared Armenia's president," Hovsep Khurshudyan, spokesman for the Heritage Party, said after submitting an appeal to the court.
The court has 10 days to rule. Armenia's central election commission said last month that there were no legal violations during the vote that could have influenced results.
