07 June 2004Chechen Asylum Cases GENEVA (AP) -- People fleeing Chechnya formed the largest group seeking asylum in developed countries during the first quarter of 2004, the UN refugee agency said. Overall, the total number of asylum seekers in 29 industrialized nations dropped sharply to 92,700, Ron Redmond, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said Friday. Some 7,500 Russians -- the great majority Chechens -- sought asylum in January, February and March, a quarter fewer than in the last three months of 2003, Redmond said. More than half of the Russian asylum claims were made in just five countries -- Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, France and Germany. The next-biggest groups seeking asylum were from Serbia and Montenegro, Turkey, China and Nigeria.
