19 February 2004Policy Shift on Iraq MOSCOW (AP) -- Russia hopes that its companies will be given a share in rebuilding Iraq now that the U.S. administration has opened the door to broader international participation in projects worth billions of dollars, a senior diplomat said Wednesday. Deputy Foreign Minister Yury Fedotov, the diplomatic point man on Iraq, said that ""it looks like possibilities are currently expanding"" for Russian companies' participation in rebuilding contracts, Interfax reported. The U.S. administration in December barred companies from nations that opposed the war in Iraq from the first round of U.S.-financed reconstruction contracts, but later indicated that it could consider their possible participation in future bids. Fedotov said that the U.S. policy shift was ""a result of the work we have been doing and pressure from the international community.
