TBILISI, Georgia -- Interfax said four United Nations military observers had been kidnapped in Georgia's breakaway Abkhazia region Thursday, but the UN mission could not confirm the report. Anri Dzhergeniya, Abkhazia's prosecutor general, was quoted by Interfax as saying the four had been seized in the mountain village of Lata, located in the Kodor Valley in the conflict zone dividing the separatist region from Georgia proper. There have been no demands for the release of the hostages. Veselin Kostov, a political adviser for the UN observers' mission in Georgia, confirmed that the four observers had been out of contact since the early afternoon. ""But I cannot comment on whether they were kidnapped or not. We are trying to verify the report,"" he said.
